Spend a night under the stars at this blissfully-secluded camping area on the banks of the Severn River. Accessible by 4WD, mountain bike or on foot, this riverside location perfect for self-sufficient campers seeking a remote park experience.

Set off in the morning for creek-side exploration to Reedy Waterhole, one of a string of deeper waterholes along the Severn River. Take the plunge and swim or kayak in the deeper water, alongside resident black ducks, cormorants and herons.

Cast a line and reel in a freshwater feast to devour by the camp side fire among family and friends.

Getting there and getting around

Reedy Waterhole camping area is in Sundown National Park, 250km (3–4hrs drive) south-west of Brisbane via Stanthorpe, and 70km north-west of Tenterfield.

  • This camping area is accessed via the north-eastern entrance to the park. A high-clearance 4WD is required.
  • From Ballandean, drive 16km via unsealed Curr Road and Sundown Road to the park's north-eastern entrance.
  • Drive 18km along the narrow rough 4WD track through the park to the camping area. The drive takes almost 2hrs.
  • Read 4WD with care for important information on 4WD safety and minimal impact driving.

Opening hours

Reedy Waterhole camping area is open 24 hours a day. Check-in to your camp after 2pm and check-out by 11am on the day of departure.

Features: A large open area with some shady spots.

Location: Accessible from the north-eastern entrance to the park. It takes about 1hr 50mins to drive the 18km along the rough 4WD track to the camping area.

Access: The camping area can be reached by 4WD vehicles only.

Number of sites: Open area without separately defined sites. This area has a maximum capacity of 36 people. The maximum group size is six people.

Suitable for: Tent camping beside your vehicle; walk-in camping.

Surface: Earth/grass.

Facilities: No facilities.

Open fires: Fuel or gas stoves recommended.

Generators: Not permitted.

Essentials to bring: Drinking water, rubbish bags, insect repellent, fuel or gas stove, warm clothing and warm bedding, firewood. Read more about before you visit.
